In reply to <a href="https://randylewis.org/hale-arena/#comment-87287">Paul Weisel</a>.

Paul,

Yes, the Kemper Arena was a cold place to watch indoor races during that weekend. I'm a big fan of visiting presidential libraries. I second your thought that the Truman library is worth the time to see. I loved it.

Best,

Bing Metz and I attended the Friday portion of the Kemper Arena show. Open doors on the mezzanine level was the 'air purification plan' and made the place damn cold. We sat on the lower level below some box seats, which gave us a bit of protection from the December winds entering the facility through the open doors. Friday morning we visited the Harry Truman Presidential Library in Independence, MO and toured a very impressive WWII photo display inside the Library. We had a motel about an hour back toward St. Louis and got an early start on Saturday morning headed east. I had picked up Bing in Indiana and returned him to pick up his car on Saturday afternoon. He then followed me to Toledo for the Saturday night indoor races at the arena. After the Toledo races, Bing found a motel, 'you pal' and Mike Knappenberger made numerous rest area stops on the way home to stay awake on what became a 12-hour trip, and I simply made a beeline for the barn. I was home after sunrise and went straight to sleep in my own 'free' bed and managed to get some things done later in the day in my shop. Bing showed up Sunday night, a perfectly good day wasted. I'd recommend the Truman Library next time you're in the area.
