Hi Tom, Wow! Those are great experiences. Yes, I-70 was THE place for ASA asphalt racing back in the 70s. Must have been so much fun hanging out with Rusty Wallace and your experience with Larry Phillips is absolutely classic. Well done!! Randy

Randy,
In '83 I attended the "I-70 U.S. Dirt Invitational" at "The World's Fastest Full 1/2 Mile Dirt Track." It was the "1st Annual". It says all of this on the t-shirt I still have. Great race. It was the first time I saw a WOO show, first time I saw a "slide job" executed. Pretty sure it was Jac Haudenschield. When he cut down across the bottom of 3 and 4 I thought surely he was coming over the wall into the front stretch grandstands, but he pulled it off.
This past Saturday evening, I was back there to see the WOO folks again, but the track has changed dramatically. Very nice, lots of new stuff, but the track is not the steep animal I remember. I found your website while looking for some info to substantiate my memories of it from long ago. It appears to be A LOT flatter now than I remember.
I built engines for the Wallace family for many years out of Kirn in St. Louis and remember going to I-70 several times with Rusty when it was asphalt. We raced against Trickle and Phillips and Martin and those guys. I think it was ASA stuff. One night I rode shotgun with "uncle Larry" Phillips in his ex-Post Office hauler in the fog from Odessa to Springfield after the race. Scared the hell out of me!
I also got to drive a buddie's Corvette in a NCCC high speed event there once. The course had some infield stuff on an asphalt pit area and 1/2 lap on the banking. That was fun.
Nice website. It would be great if somebody has some info on the changes made to the track banking.
Peace

Hi Nancy, I'm not in the market right now for your quilt but it sounds like a great collectable. Maybe someone who reads this will give you a call. Good luck. Randy
