In reply to <a href="https://randylewis.org/pennsboro-speedway/#comment-85923">Thom Houghton</a>.

Thom,

Thanks very much for your note. You are 100% correct. Jim Dunn's racing accident and death did not occur at the Pennsboro Speedway. According to Dirtfans.com Dunn was killed at the Paducah International Speedway. Jim did win the first ever Dirt Track World Championship at Pennsboro. Thanks for helping me get the correct information on this.

While you are correct that Jim Dunn died in a fiery accident in 1982, I don't think that his untimely death occurred at Pennsboro. To my knowledge, only local driver Freddie Hadley, whose son I attended high school with in nearby Tyler County, lost his life at Pennsboro. (In fact, if you type in this deceased driver's name, I believe that you will access an old photograph that reputedly captures this unfortunate accident when his black #83 struck a tree at the far end of the speedway between turns #3 and 4.) In contrast, I seem to remember that Dunn's fateful accident occurred near his home in Zanesville, Ohio, perhaps at Muskingum Speedway. Blessings. P.S. I too attended that '82 race when Charlie unfurled the wedge of cheese, which, incidentally, he had to enter via a stepladder. I even have a racing shirt that depicts its unusual appearance, prompting one fan to ask me the "Swartzmobile" was a big block modified.
