Hi Katie,

Yes, A.J. Foyt was one of the very best. You sound like a great fan. Thanks for reminding us of that day in Pocono.

Best,

Randy

Hi Randy,

I was in Pocono when USAC and CART were at odds. A.J. was sticking with USAC and the field of Indy cars only had about 17 cars? They filled the field with Sprint cars. I could NOT believe what I was seeing. The Sprints held their ground. The Indy cars with their high screaming engines... and the Sprints with their rumbling almost Harley sounding engines, racing together. That was the year A.J. in his Indy car hit the wall going into turn 1. He hit it with the right side of his Indy car and a post (?) of some kind came crashing down on his car and A.J. ducked just in time to not have his head cut off.
Amazing man. I think he was over 50 years old then and was still quick and sharp.

Hi Dan, What a pleasant surprise. That's right. Your dad Rocky Nohl was my first favorite driver. With Mt. Hawley closing in 1964 I would have been fifteen at the time. I guess that's a long time ago, isn't it? I believe the track opened up about four months after I was born. I'll send you a private message. Would love to hear about your dad's racing exploits. Thanks for taking the time to reach out. Best, Randy

Hello Randy,
I was looking for some stuff online about my dad and found your site. I am the son of your first favorite driver, Rocky Nohl. I remember those Saturday nights at Mt. Hawley. As I was very young so most of the time I played with other kids under the bleachers. Interestingly my dad knew nothing about mechanics, he just drove the cars. I grew up in Morton, IL right across the street from Heiniger Motors who also sponsored a car my dad drove. A quarter mile away was the Ford garage. “Buy your Ford in Morton” was the slogan on the side of his car.

Hi Brian, Thanks for taking the time to write. Your dad and his associates built a state of the art facility. It's too bad Ontario Motor Speedway was just a few years before it's time. Maybe another 10 years later when NASCAR was having its big growth spurt would have saved the track. I went there at least three times when we lived in California from 1976-1979. Caught a couple of NASCAR Cup races and an Indy car race. We moved back to the Golden State for good in 1983. I don't know if California has exactly supported big time auto racing in the past 50 years as well as some other places. That didn't help OMS. I suspect someone lost their share of money on that project...unless they made out with the developer later on.
