Greetings from Gering, Nebraska
From the travels and adventures of the “World’s #1 Trackchaser”
Oregon Trail Speedway – Dirt Oval – Lifetime track #366
*
My second lifetime Nebraska track.
Carol and I visited the Oregon Trail Speedway on Friday, May 7, 1999. The track was my 366th lifetime track to see. It was only my second Nebraska track. Harry Gardner is car #8 was a feature winner. I didn’t begin writing my famous Trackchaser Reports until about track #430. Therefore, I have very little in the way of notes or memories from this track.
This was a very rural asphalt oval track. My notes tell me I received a nice mention from the track announcer! Gering, Nebraska is located in the far western part of Nebraska. It’s only a few miles from the Wyoming state line.
Five days before we went to Gering, Nebraska I was trackchasing at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia. Then the night after Gering I trackchased at the I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, Colorado. The next weekend Carol and I were watching races at the brand new Irwindale Speedway (track #368) with our children Kristy and Jim. Yep, we’ve been doing this for a while.
I believe the track is now named “Highway 92 Raceway”. They’ve been racing on the 1/4-mile asphalt track on Friday nights all summer long since 1968.
Do you have any experience with auto racing at the Oregon Trail Speedway?
By the way you might have remembrances about this track. If so, please feel free to share them in the comments section below. If you have any photos from back in the day, send them to me at Ranlay@yahoo.com. I’ll try to include them here.
