From the travels and adventures of the “World’s #1 Trackchaser”
In 2013 I switched over from my “old” website to my “new” site. One of the features I most enjoyed from the old site were the guestbook comments from friends, family and folks I met along the trackchasing trail. People had been “signing” the guestbook since 2005. I didn’t want to lose those valuable messages of encouragement and information. Therefore I copied them all over from the old site to my new one. I hope you enjoy reading messages that came in from all over the world. I certainly did. However with “progress” comes more options. Reply Reply Reply Brent Brennan 09:08 PM on April 30, 2013 I saw that you were at Cove Valley Speedway in Martinsburg, Pa. That is one of the tracks I run at and I also run at Coveview Speedway in Warfordsburg, Pa which is right off I-70 near the Maryland line. I didn’t see it on your list, so just figured to give you one for your future list! It is really cool at how may tracks there are. I know I would of never thought about tracks in places like the middle east. Have a great time and thanks again for getting some publicity for smaller tracks! I was the lady that had the pleasure of video taping you at the Tilleda Ice races this past weekend. It was amazing to hear all of your stories from all of the different race tracks that you have been to in your life! I wish that we could of had more time to talk to you, but I know that we all could of talked for hours. Anyway, I hope that the pictures and the videos turned out okay. Hope you can make it back to Wisconsin sometime soon! Please keep in touch! taycha_5@rocketmail.com Reply David Sexton 06:28 PM on February 11, 2013 I had a few moments at work and I was reminiscing about my childhood where my father and I attended Saturday Races at the Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Ia. (early -mid 70’s). My favorite driver was Darrell Dake, I met him several times, spent time with his wife and he in the pits after the races. He and I exchanged more than one fan letters back in the day. What a surprise that I find this site by Googling his name. I knew Darrell had passed in 2007 from the Cedars Rapids Gazette at or around the same time. What I find ironic is that I too live in San Clemente, CA. Small world. My favorite memory was the USAC Bulldog 150 ran in Des Moines in 1975; Darrell was given a car to drive by one of the big drivers, led over 100 laps , had to pit last 5 laps and lost the lead. Some great races in Des Moines at that time, many great regional drivers, Ramo Stott, Ernie Derr, Don Hoffman and others. Reply Wendy Hurst 07:25 PM on February 04, 2013 Randy, I can’t believe you found us!!! I bet as you drove down the winding gravel road, deep in woods, on a dead end road, you must of thought to yourself; “Where the hell am I & what am I getting myself into?” lol Anyways, I hope you enjoyed The Buffalo Lake Ice Races in Montello, Wisconsin. & If your ever back in our neck of the woods again, please stop in. We would love your company. Safe Travels! ~Wendy Reply Cassandra Ervin 07:46 AM on January 08, 2013 Have you been to 35 raceway park in Frankfort ohio? if so could you link the track report? Reply Eric 10:52 AM on December 15, 2012 Hello Randy. Found your website after searching for some info on what used to be the Vinton Raceway in Vinton, Ohio. I am the new owner of the property and I was just looking for some old pictures or info about it during it’s hayday. The track has been closed for numerous years and the property itself is in really bad shape. Between mother nature taking back her land and people dumping their trash all over it… we have a lot of work to do. The racetrack itself is still there, but I had the Ohio EPA come out and remove all the tires on the property. They were starting to become a health hazard. The village council passed an ordinance that basically makes it impossible to reopen the track (I had no intention of doing this anyway, so it’s no big deal). The track itself is soon to become a lake and we are going to put a self sustaining farm on the property. Just thought some of you racing folks would like to hear what has happened to it. Reply Dave Garrison 10:27 PM on December 11, 2012 Enjoyed our visit at Duck River. I was able to sit through both nites with no trouble from the cancer side effects. I am currently onn round five of eight doing my Chemo treatments. Blood counts are getting pretty low and I am a prisoner in my own house. But it is better than catching something and dying from it. anyway you are a little behind on your updating but not too bad and hope to save you a seat again some day. Dave P.S. I read about four books a week as I have a new library just around the corner from my house. Thank you for stopping by! Reply Jack Nelson 07:04 PM on June 21, 2011 Randy I am the promoter at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Cortez, CO. First i would like to thank you for coming, but in reading your review it said we were going to run a second set of heat races. That isn’t correct, but I wouldn’t put it past my announcer to have said that. I have 2 different ones and both are pretty green in the racing world. They try hard but do get a little confused some times. We ran our mains after the intermission and were done before 11:00. We always try to keep the show moving along as quickly as possible. The reason we run such a limited schedule is that we work around the Fairgrounds and other area tracks schedules. We don’t race when they do and they don’y race when we do and the Fairgrounds doesn’t let us run during most of there scheduled events. 2 days race weekends work for lot of our racers since they travel from other towns, it’s nice to make a weekend out of it. My apologies for the confusion and again thank you for coming. Jack Nelson Reply Tom Gallagher 06:07 PM on June 20, 2011 Dear Mr. Lewis, I sent you an email from my gmail account. Reply 02:54 PM on May 12, 2011 From Randy Hasbrook, Sheffield, Illinois Randy, I emailed you some time back about Darrell. I have a model of the Fairlane Darrell raced and won the season points championship with in 1968 at Davenport, Iowa. Darrell autographed the trunk lid of this model, which was made by my uncle. My dad also has a super 8 video of the 1968 Iowa 300 in which Darrell raced in at Hawkeye Downs. They had a regular showed on Saturday night at the Downs and I believe John Schlemmer wadded Darrell up in turn four of the feature. They worked on the car all night and got it back in shape to race the next day for the big show. I remember we stayed at a motel in Cedar Rapids and there was a dump truck in the parking lot with a race car in it which belonged to Ray Guss Sr. If you are ever in this part of the country you need to look me up. I also have of picture of myself, my brother, a couple of friends who lived in Cedar Rapids, Darrell and Big John Moss, which was taken in front of Darrell’s garage around 1972. I always enjoy surfing your site and it brings back a lot of memories. In 2008, I rode my bike across Iowa on RAGBRAI and was fortunate enough to get my picture taken with Roger Dolan at Lisbon and Verlin Eaker in Mechanicsville as the route passed through those towns. I watched them many, many times race against Darrell and they are both true champions and gentlemen. The likes of all of those guys will never be seen again. They were way ahead of their time, geniuses of the sport, fierce competitors, but above all, great ambassadors and sportsmen. There are alot of things I remember like the back of my hand about those days, things I will never forget, and was fortunate enough to see, watch, and talk to Darrell, something that I will cherish forever. If you have LaVerle’s email, feel free to forward this email to her. If I ever get back out that way I need to look her up and have a nice talk with her. Thanks Randy! Reply bob gordon 03:28 AM on August 31, 2010 i was reading about your review of the billings motorsports park and i agree with your analogy of how things were run there ,the dirt is just that dirt no clay content what so ever thats why it takes so long to pack it, i raced there in 07 08 and 09 , as for the belero speedway that you mentioned its not gone the track itself is there along with all the barriers . i live in shepherd mt and drive by it daily, m father raced there from q1060 till his death there in 1966 , there are rumors floating around town that it may be reopened but not sure how valid those rumors are as an individual bought the property and built a huge barn there for horses . if this track does reopen please come back and check it out as it has clay for a surface and is quite fast sincerely bob gordon hobby stock driver # 30 Reply ciddi 11:00 AM on August 28, 2010 When my friend was heading four hours north to NY somewhere to see a go kart race that could have been in a parking lot for all I know, I began something new….go back to the tracks I really like over and over and over. I live in Ironton, Ohio and we race Vintage Motorcycles … Flat Track. Rock Top is going to have their first ever Southern Ohio Flat Track Championship race on August 21, 2010. It will be interesting to see what and how they can smooth this track out to race. Ironton, Ohio will be having their Rally of the River that weekend. The race track is hoping for a good turn out. It would be nice to have this as an annual event… but, I have my doubts when people from out of town see this facility. Most of the races we race in are at the nice Fairgrounds with a great track and nice facilities. This will be very interesting. Reply Collett Grammer 01:07 AM on July 18, 2010 Thanks on your comments about the speedway and the East Peoria area I too went to EP high as I am from Creve Coeur. I think that you have forgotten that the flagman’s stand used to be on the other side of the track on a platform above the fence across from the judges stand right by the pit gate fence I don’t remember when it was moved to the judge’s stand but in the seventies I used to pit crew in white pants for Gerry Reeder and the flag stand was on the same side that the fans were. I first saw him as a five-year-old in 1967 at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, Iowa. My father used to take me and together with my mom and three-year-old brother, we’d join my grandma, her second husband, and about a half-dozen friends and watch the races every Friday night. We did this for several years and once in awhile, dad would take me to West Liberty, Hawkeye Downs and the Quad-Cities Raceway (but there they did Figure-8 races). I always cheered for Darrell. And to Mr. Lewis, yes the stands are PACKED every sunday night, because its the best dirt racing around! Reply David Ballard 02:02 PM on February 20, 2010 Mr. Lewis, I was recently navigated to your pictures of Windy Hollow Speedway in Owensboro, Kentucky. While I do agree with you that at one time the track was in need of work, it has since changed. My brother, Mark, and I spent last year working the track for Scott Slaton. Scott has done a lot of improvements to and around the track. We spent many late nights and weekends away from family to give racers the best possible racing conditions. You should consider returning to the race track. You will see some of the best three and four wide racing on dirt anywhere. No, you will probably not see any figure 8 racing. It was dropped from a safety stand point. The racers in this area deserve the right to see their home track shown for what it is and not as it was. Reply Alan Slaton 11:50 PM on February 19, 2010 I noticed that you have been to Windy Hollow Speedway several years ago. And most of the Comments u had seemed to be kinda negative. Most around here are very happy and said that its looks like a new place. I would like to invite you back to Windy hollow Speedway in Owensboro Kentucky and see what you think. However we no longer run Figure 8 racing anymore, but im sure u will be pleased with the changes you see. E-mail me @ love2race8up@yahoo.com and i will let u come to the middle of the track. Cor Reply Jim Parsley 10:18 PM on January 01, 2010 Just outside my hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, is a historic relic of very early NASCAR history, a 0.9 mile dirt track that was used for NASCAR races from the early 1940’s until the late 1960’s. It was abandoned for about 40 years, allowed to grow up in forest. Relatively recently it has been recognized as a historic site, given protection against development, and has been reopened as a historic park. There have been several racer reunion events there the last couple of years. If you haven’t already done so, you might find it an interesting site to visit. Reply Johnny Oberthien 04:01 PM on December 04, 2009 One of the first drivers that I remember making an inpression on me was Darrell. It was 1967 at Hawkeye Downs. In those days he had tpo beat the best at a weekly show. Drivers like IMCA National Tour regulars Ramo Stott and Lem Blankinship. Tell you a little fact not many know of. I became the race director at Dubuque Speedway and was told I could hire on anyone I wished. This was after Darrell had hung up the helmet. I called him and arranged a meeting (in his shop). I asked him if he would be interested in the head tech’s job at the track. Long story short Darrell said he was enjoying just being able to roam around the pits and stands. Plus he would never want any driver upset with him over a call. Glad he said no because I have NEVER heard anyone say a bad word about Darrell. By the way, I flagged at 100’s of events Darrell raced in and not once did I have to worry about his driving style. RIP Darrell, we all loved you and will miss you. Reply Larry A. When I was in high school in the 70’s Providence College, aka the Friars not the Flyers, had a great basketball team with Ernie DeGregiorio and Marvin Barnes who went to the final four in the NCAA’s. They were a fun team to watch and me being a big guy I was partial to Barnes but Ernie D sure could dribble, shoot and distribute the ball. You may have noticed the banners hanging from the ceiling honoring these two and the teams of the 70’s especially 1973. I am a North Carolina Tar Heels fan and have been for many years but enjoy watching some of the Northeast teams as well. Go Heels!!!!! The soon to be 2009 NCAA basketball champs. I hope you managed to stay awake to see the ice racing in Minnesota. Enjoy your golfing this week. Cheers John Reply CD 10:40 AM on February 14, 2009 I think it is cool that you go to all these tracks, but what I cannot understand is why you go see crap races? Is it that the travel expenses are a lot so you want cheap race tickets? Some examples: You have been to Barrie in Ontario and Sun Valley in BC, you saw some local crap races when you could have seen the GREAT CASCAR/NASCAR Canadian Tire series. I have seen that series at many tracks and they never fail at putting on a great race. Also, you have been to tracks in Australia but never went to V8 Supercars! That series is excellent. You have also been to Andorra recently, just recently they had Trophee Andros(The best ice racing in the world!) but from what i could see in your photos you saw something else. I travel to a lot of races in the US and Canada(can’t afford international travel yet) but I make sure I pick quality events. It is not worth the cost of traveling to see crap in my opinion. Mr. Esser scored one on January 1 and four altogether over the first weekend. Sorry I’ve not replied to your last post card (with the Mexican senoritas, ole!) until now. You have a nice web site. Actually I’ve not been to Freeport Raceway so I guess I’m square. I was impressed by their web site. That was quite a sickening disaster at NIU. I thought I’d never heard of Cole Hall but as it turns out I think I had Biology and Sociology courses in the building. I’m just lucky I didn’t freeze to death on the way to the art building which was about a mile from the dorm. By the way, while I’m complaining, the past winter here was heavy duty cold, ice, and snow. There were ice jams on the Rock river that caused flooding when the wind chill temperature was about minus 20 F. We’ve had a cool but nice spring. Not exactly race weather though. Reply nick 10:11 PM on March 09, 2008 at the rice lake ice races the reason we drill holes in the ice is so that we can bring water on the ice and when they plow the track it turns slushy and makes good grip on the track Reply Troy Holder 07:44 PM on March 09, 2008 Randy, Thank you very much for making Rice Lake Ice Racing one of your tracks. Also, thanks for the good report, we have a lot of good people that put on a heck of a show!! Wish I would of had more time to spend with you, gets busy driving two classes of cars and overseeing the program but, for some odd reason, I enjoy it. I noticed in your photo gallery that you wondered why we drilled holes before the feature event. We usually do this twice a day, once before the races begin and again before the features. In doing so we are able too bring water from the lake onto the ice, mixing it in with the snow dust making a “slush”. This gives us a tacky racing surface, thus giving you the spectator a good show. Glad to hear you had a good time, I love this site and will keep in touch. Although I live in MN. and have now raced for 38 years, my original connection to Iowa racing was my uncle Corky who lived just down the road from Darrell for many many years. I was fortunate enough over the years to stop at Darrells shop several times. As an impressionable young man in my late teens and early 20’s Darrell and many of his contemporaries were bigger than life in my eyes. In the mid 70’s I bought a car from Ken Walton, but not before having the deal blessed by Darrell. I never forget those days or the respect I had for all those folks. I race throughout ND (weekly in Grand Forks) and just missed your trip to the Cameron Lake ice races a few weeks back. If you ever head this way don’t hesitate to contact me. Reply John Reznik 03:29 PM on January 30, 2008 Hi Randy, Just wanted to drop you a line to say hello. I had a link sent to me by my racing partner, titled “sleeping in”, and instructions on what to do. Being that I slept in today(supposed to do an alignment),I figured he was giving me a hard time already. So you can imagine me laughing when I see the photo of his truck(blue ford)/our racecare, in front of the hotel, with him working away at getting everything going. I was suffering from a wine induced hangover, and did’nt manage to do anything. He even packed my bag, lol! Anyway, I read your note about a “good looking” pit crew, but even better than that is a good buddy, when you go racing. Also, Im totally jealous of your hobby! I manged to hit Monza and Spa this year, for F1, so maybe that’s the quiet beginnings for me. Hope we see you again up in BC sometime. Thanks for the great coverage of our event, feels like we have made the big time. Tony Reply Josh Johnson 09:53 AM on January 23, 2008 Randy, I try to check your site frequently. I have seen you in Ada, MN, Lisbon, ND and Glyndon, MN; as well as sitting next to you in Jamestown, ND in 2003. I have yet to actually talk to you, but wouldn’t mind the privelage. Anyways, some time in February, there will be ice races in Erskine, MN. It should be noted that the local Dirt Late Model club plans to have a race with some of these cars against each other. For more info: http://forums.delphiforums.com/nlra It would be nice to get an e-mail back from you. I thoroughly enjoy reading about your visits to different tracks. Reply Keith Robinson 11:55 PM on January 03, 2008 Hi Randy A friend told me about your site months ago and I’ve only just got around to checking it out; WONDERFUL, great job! I race at River’s Edge Road Course in Mission British Columbia. You visited us on October 6/7th. of last year. I’m the #90 car in your ‘Green Flag’ picture (far left). Thank you for visiting our track and I’m glad you got to see a race. We have never cancelled a race in the 14 years we’ve been in operation. It came close this year in June when the Fraser River flooded and came within 2ft. of the track surface!! Further to your mentioning ice racing; we would love to see you at Barnes Lake this winter; check out www.carsonice.ca Please contact me if you need any information or even a ride to the lake, it’s about 4 hours inland from Vancouver. Closest airport is probably Kamloops (I know you have been there!). I could pick you up there if you like? I prepare an Acura for Fred Robertson who owns the Desert Inn Motel in Cache Creek(that’s where all the racers stay). Best wishes for you and yours in 2008. Keith Robinson Track Manager SCCBC. Troy Miller 05:55 AM on November 18, 2007 I found this website through a Darrel Dake link on 4m.net. It’s a well done site and I was suprised to see you were in Nagoya, Japan recently as I live there. Mitch Wood 09:39 PM on November 16, 2007 It was unexpected when I opened the link to your website from atokas website to see my son pictured in the Sr Champ Heat race,(he’s the blue 8m Mitch Wood). Your comments are right on regarding atoka, they have a first rate facility and a large crowd week in and week out. I have to agree with you on how riverside looks right now but ck back soon. The guy who owns riverside owns atoka and he along wit his staff built it up from nothing to what it is now. If things continue i’m sure riverside will be a first rate track in the coming years. Danny Davis 01:33 PM on November 13, 2007 Randy, Sorry I missed you when you visited our facility. You should have just came up into the tower, if you ever stop by again please do so. Roger Ward 10:44 AM on October 21, 2007 Great trip, Thanks for letting me be part of it. bob mcgrew 04:48 PM on October 15, 2007 I grew up in the same neighborhood where dake lived. Vernon View it was called. My father bob McGrew Sr. used to help dake out in the pits when he raced at hawkeye downs in the mid to late 60’s. my dad had a great way with engines and learned a lot from darrell, and i remember spending time in his garage while they worked on cars. My dad always told a story about him and dake going to the car auction in mt vernon, and finding a 66 vette, and taking it for a ride toward iowa city. they were both drinking and my dad was trying to pour some whiskey into a pop bottle, when dake told him “this car is a pooch”. just as they entered the Ivan Hoe bridge, he down shifted, gunned it, did a 360 going through the bridge and headed back to the auction. My dad said he didn’t spill a drop, and the car made a funny wheezing noise when they shut it off. crazy and good. just thought i would share this. I wish I could travel and be a race car driver. If I could just once be behind the wheel of a fast car I could prove to be the best. It’s not the car but the driver. I was resently in a wreck that a woman ran a stop sign and tottaled my 97 contour. I have been laied up in bed since. I can’t wait til I get another car. I used to beat any and all kinds of sports cars on the public roads. I have worked on cars all my life. I am 33 years old and ready to race for a living. Thank you for your your interest in the history of OMS. My father Architect Robert W. Kite AIA was Principal in Charge of the speedway design as President of Kite & Overpeck Architects, Beverly Hills. RWK “aka Bob” performed project design research visiting major national and international racing facilities in the mid to late sixties before officially designing California’s largest-ever stadium for client Stolte Construction. K&O’s principal design team was Robert Kite, Sherwin Small, Ted Tyler and John Hori. Successor firms include Kite & Associates, Santa Monica and SRK Architects Inc. Los Angeles where the senior Kite was associated as principal emeritus until his passing in early 2021.
That sounds about right to me that Pennsylvania would have nearly the most tracks of any state. There’s a very good chance that info came from the “National Speedway Directory”. That’s a great book for listing all active oval, road course and drag strips in the U.S. and Canada. You can get that book from http://www.speedwaysonline.com.
The gov of PA was on Sunday’s NASCAR broadcast saying PA had the second-most race tracks of any state. Do you know of a source for such a list?
