For whatever reason, winged kart racing is big in Idaho. Considering that the population isn’t that big and that the tracks are pretty far apart this surprises me.

The Black Canyon Speedway in Emmett had six classes of winged karts. The Caldwell Arena (we went there with Frank and Debbie Eich) and the Kuna International Raceway were both indoor racetracks that featured winged karts. Winged outlaw karts were also the main attraction on the inner oval at the Pocatello Raceway, the Pleasant Valley Raceway, the Rock Creek Racetrack, Sand Hollow Raceway Park and Sandy Downs. That’s a lot of winged kart racing! By the way, Sandy Downs (above) is a horse racing facility that offers pari-mutuel betting.

Figure 8 racing is big in Idaho as well. That’s somewhat unusual as a neighboring state to Idaho such as Montana doesn’t have any F8 racing. About 25% of the tracks I’ve seen in the Gem State were F8 tracks. The Rexburg track was so wet from heavy rains that I needed to buy a new pair of boots from a nearby Walmart in order to enjoy the races. The Teton County Fairgrounds in Driggs gave our visit some fantastic newspaper coverage and an at the track interview.

At the Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls, I did a TV interview about my trackchasing hobby with channel 11. I’ve always gotten a lot of media attention from my visits to Idaho from both TV and newspapers. The Lewiston Roundup in Lewiston surprised us with a race for UTVs on an oval track. We’ll take it! Frank and Debbie Eich also joined us for a night of racing at the Meridian Speedway in Meridian, a Boise suburb.

At the Pocatello Raceway paved oval, the boat races were most entertaining. On that night as folks were leaving the races, a woman fell through the grandstands from a height of about ten feet. Luckily, she was O.K. I’ve enjoyed trackchasing in Idaho because of the diversity of their tracks and race types.
