MAINE
The Pine Tree State
From the travels and adventures of the “World’s #1 Trackchaser” All-Time Favorite Maine Track: Fantasy Speedway Current lifetime trackchasing state rank: 6 Best Memories: The state of Maine is a long way from where I live in California in a number of ways. I’m a big fan of the Pine Tree State. Trackchasing has taken me to Maine eight separate times. Traveling to Canada has added many more drives through the state. My favorite adventure was a visit to the Fantasy Speedway. At Fantasy they try to replicate racing just like it was in the ‘50s. The hospitality from those folks at the Fantasy Speedway was top notch. Had there been a little more time I might still be hanging out with this crowd. Probably my biggest disappointment was, as a racechaser, was a visit to the Oxford Plains Speedway back in the 80s. I went there back in 1986 only to encounter a full weekend of rain. They never turned a racing lap! However, as a member of the racing press, I did come away with some very impressive Oxford 250 swag! I’ve returned a couple of times for racing at Oxford Plains. The Get-Er-Done Speedway in Skowhegan has to be one of the most redneck tracks I’ve visited but with real nice people. Carol and I saw our first-ever night ice racing on Moosehead Lake in Greenville Junction. I first met the famous John Sullivan (above right) at the Richmond Karting Speedway in Richmond. John has been a great resource for New England racing. At the Spud Speedway in Caribou Carol and I gave the command to start the engines and Carol drew the 50/50 ticket! The Unity Raceway had one of most quaint old-time covered grandstands I’ve ever seen. When we went to see racing at the Wiscasset Speedway we saw President George Bush (#43) fishing in Kennebunkport. Finally, I’ve done a lot of at the track interviews with my friends in Maine. If you see a track link in the above list simply click on it to be transferred to my Trackchaser Report. Here you will be able to read about my adventure at this particular track. Not only will you learn about my time at the track but you’ll hear about all of the interesting people, places and things I encountered during the entire trip, coming and going, to that speedway. Most of my Trackchaser Reports will also include a photo album and YouTube video. Check it all out. Don’t be afraid to use the “search” box in the upper right corner of my website’s home page. Just type in the track name or whatever and you’ll be directed to the place you want to be. Below is a key to surface types and track configurations so you can understand the above list just a little bit easier. Surface types: D-dirt; P-paved; M-mixed Configuration types: O-oval; RC-road course; F8-figure 8 track
