Sunrise Valley Speedway
Dirt oval
Lifetime track #249
I first went to the Sunrise Valley Speedway back on April 22, 1995. This was my 249th lifetime track to see. Prior to about track #430 I did not record specific notes about the tracks I visited. My records do show that car #626 won the feature race. My only other note read, “About 7 classes with 4 cars each”.
I believe the oval track part of Sunrise Valley was short lived. I’ve driven past the track a few times since that first visit. It looks as if they only have a motorcycle MX track operating on the property now.
I can tell you a little bit about my 1995 trackchasing season. I saw a grand total of 22 new tracks. A large number of those were on the west coast. Eight were first time visits in California including trips to Ernie Purssell Motor Speedway, Barona Speedway and Rocky Hill Speedway among others.
I was still a racechaser and not really a trackchaser back in 1995. In ’95 I saw the Chili Bowl, Speed Weeks at East Bay, the Dream, King’s Royal and Historical Big One at Eldora. Then I stopped off at the Knoxville Nationals for four nights before returning to Eldora for the World 100. Then it was on to the Silver Dollar Nationals in Chico, a D.I.R.T. race at Rolling Wheels and finally the Illinois state championship at my boyhood track, the Peoria Speedway. Remember I was living in Southern California at the time. I took racechasing then as seriously as I have taken trackchasing lately.
You might have remembrances of the Sunrise Valley Speedway. If so, please feel free to share in the comments section below. If you have any photos from back in the day, send them to me at Ranlay@yahoo.com. I’ll try to include them here.
