MONTANA
The Treasure State
From the travels and adventures of the “World’s #1 Trackchaser” All-Time Favorite Montana Track: Belaro Speedway – Billings Best Memories: I routinely tell people that I have flown on an average of three flights per week, every week since I was 23 years old. That amounts to more than 7,000 airplane rides to date. I began my business career in 1972. I flew all the time. Some thirty years later I retired from Procter & Gamble in 2002. I think I might fly even more often in retirement than I did in business. What is the significance of the above information? The first airplane trip I ever took, at the age of 21, was to visit my girlfriend who was living in Wyoming. Her parents owned a motel and campground (above). On that trip, I landed in Billings, Montana. On the way to the Cowboy State, I stopped off at the Belaro Speedway in Billings, Montana for a night of racing. I remember they had four classes of racing and four drivers in each division. The Belaro Speedway, which no longer exists, is officially known at my 14th-lifetime speedway and my favorite in Montana. Over the years I have followed the Montana Bump N Run racing organization. They race low-dollar, big-engine Detroit Iron on dirt road courses. I’ve had a lot of fun at their events. By the way, whatever happened to that girl in Wyoming. I married her! That’s right. My wife Carol and I met at Northern Illinois University. In the summers she lived with her family in Dayton, Wyoming. She is affectionately known as, “Trackchasing’s First Mother” and the “World’s #3 Trackchaser”! If you see a track link in the above list simply click on it to be transferred to my Trackchaser Report. Here you will be able to read about my adventure at this particular track. Not only will you learn about my time at the track but you’ll hear about all of the interesting people, places and things I encountered during the entire trip, coming and going, to that speedway. Most of my Trackchaser Reports will also include a photo album and YouTube video. Check it all out. Don’t be afraid to use the “search” box in the upper right corner of my website’s home page. Just type in the track name or whatever and you’ll be directed to the place you want to be. Below is a key to surface types and track configurations so you can understand the above list just a little bit easier. Surface types: D-dirt; P-paved; M-mixed Configuration types: O-oval; RC-road course; F8-figure 8 track
